There are a number of steps to follow when planning to power your home for your solar freedom

1. Investigate Your Home's Energy Efficiency:    Before starting the process of powering your home with solar energy, you should investigate your houses energy usage. Consider carrying ourt a Home energy audits: A home energy audit can help you understand where your home is losing energy and what steps to take to improve the efficiency of your home.

2. Appliances and electronics: Check you appliance usage and evaluate their energy rating, consider changing them in due course to reduce your energy usage. An energy efficient unit may cost a bit more initially, but its pays itself off over a period of time.

3.Led Lighting & your heating & cooling:   Switch to energy efficient lighting, such as LED light bulbs.       Heating and cooling: If you use electricity to heat and cool your home, your heating and cooling needs will significantly affect the amount of solar energy you may need. Weatherproof your home and heating and cooling efficiently will reduce the amount of electricity you need to produce with solar.

4. Consider your solar protentionalBefore deciding on the best way to use solar electricity at home, assess the potential solar energy that can be produce via your roof. Ideally north facing roofs can produce the most Solar energy, especially during the colder months.        Does your house have a flat of pitched roof, both which can accommodate solar panels. There are several mapping services and tools are available to help you determine your home’s solar energy potential.

Consider Nearby shadey trees. Along with the shade from your  neighbours trees when panning the location of your solar panels.

5. Estimate Your Solar Electricity Needs:

To help your contractor to provide recommendations for your system’s type and size, gather information about your home and electricity use.

  • Review electricity bills to determine annual electricity needs. Your usage will be shown in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Review each month of the year; you may use more electricity in some months than others (e.g., if you run the air conditioner in the summer).

  • Consider any planned changes. If you will be purchasing an electric vehicle or are planning a to add in a pool that, that will need heating.

6. Do you plan to add a Electric or Hybrid car to your eco planned home?

·       What is the usage of your car charger of usage of future charger station?

·       Are the charger station installed  or incorporated in your  future plan ?

·       Does your system allow for an electric or hybrid car?

7. Obtain Bids and Site Assessments from Solar Installers

When researching installers, be sure to find qualified and insured professionals with the proper certification—the solar industry standard certification is from. Before you make any commitments, ask for proof of licensure before working with an installer.  When interviewing suppliers, consider asking the following questions:

  • What is the warranty for this system like?     With a variety of systems from Canadian to German to Asian. Compare the different systems on the market, their generating power and their warranty. This often reflects in their costs, however is important to consider when making such an investment in your future.

  • Bids should clearly state the maximum generating capacity of the system—measured in Watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). Also request an estimate of the amount of energy that the system will produce on an annual or monthly basis (measured in kilowatt-hours). This figure is most useful for comparison with your existing utility bills.

8. The prefect angle for your solar panels.

In Australian the ideal angle of solar panels is between 30 t0 45 degrees, being in the southern hemisphere – the sun travels north.  Most important to remember that Melbourne has a high number of cloudy days throughout the year (with approximately 113.9 overcast days per year,

Getting solar panels in Melbourne is a great choice  which has ample sunlight despite its cloudiness .However, to ensure that your solar panels are working to their maximum efficiency, you need to ensure that they are facing the optimum angle for your situation.
